Subject: Archaeological watching brief at Kimberlands, Northlew, West Devon
Description:
A watching brief was maintained during initial groundworks for the construction of 25 dwellings and associated roads, sewers and a pumping station. This included all topsoil removal and reductions in ground level. Foundation and service trenches within the proposed site were also inspected.
The site occupies a total area of 0.8 hectares of former pasture, lying adjacent to the west of the historic core of Northlew, and comprised the southern extent of a large sub-square field located between the main access routes into the village (Fig 1).
Results:
The general layer sequence comprised:
* 0.25-0.3m mid grey brown silty clay topsoil containing occasional small and medium sized, sub-rounded sub-angular stones;
* 0.05-0.1m light yellow brown silty clay subsoil containing rare small and medium sized, sub-rounded sub-angular stones; and
* pale yellow and grey clay natural.
Conclusion:
No archaeological features or deposits were observed. No artefacts were recovered other than occasional fragments of 19th or 20th century pottery, which were discarded on site.
