Pinhoe Hall, Mount Pleasant, Hundon HUD 030
Application No. SE/04/1511/P TL 7340 4820
Oasis No. suffolkc1-4470 Report No. 2004/126
Summary
An archaeological monitoring of groundworks at Pinhoe Hall, Hundon, showed a complete absence of archaeological features.
Introduction
A single visit was made to the site on 26th October to 2004 to monitor groundworks for the redevelopment of a former barn. The work was carried out to a Brief and Specification issued by R.D.Carr (Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, Conservation Team) to fulfil a planning condition on planning application SE/04/1511/P. The work was funded by the developer, Mr B Bolland.
Interest in the site was based upon its location, immediately to the north of a medieval moated enclosure, a Scheduled Ancient Monument recorded on the county Sites and Monuments Record as HUD 002 (Fig. 1). Situated close to the moats entrance causeway there was potential for medieval occupation evidence, such as farmyard and ancillary buildings, to be disturbed by any groundworks.
Methodology and Results
The site, an area measuring approximately 12m by 4.5m, had seen the total removal of the pre-existing barn and had been stripped to a depth of 0.2-0.3m. This had exposed the natural subsoil, a thick yellow/grey clay with chalk, across the entire site. In the sections the subsoil lay beneath a thin layer, 0.1m thick, of modern material and topsoil and had been truncated by the excavation of the site.
Discussion
No archaeological features were seen on the site, which indicates that if medieval occupation was situated outside of the moat enclosure, it may not have extended in this direction. However the shallow depth at which the subsoil survives shows that there may have been considerable truncation in the past, during the construction and demolition of the original barn, as well as in the stripping of the site, which may have removed any archaeological levels.
